When we listen we digest. When we chew we process. When we hear we see. Both qualities that take the efforts of intentionality in order to truly receive.
Many times you may find yourself without even realizing listening to someone only to verbiage what you want to say next. Completely missing out on the digestion and skipping straight to the output.
I find when I make the intention to really slow down when receiving information or speaking to someone, I fully chew the meal that’s being served. Processing each fine tune detail so I don’t miss it and neither will you.
Intentionality: the fact of being deliberate or purposive.
The quality of mental states (e.g., thoughts, beliefs, desires, hopes) that consists in their being directed toward some object or state of affairs.
The quality of something matters. How you use it, how you see it, how you go about a way of doing something. It requires much attention and care. When we use all of these attributes in the way we function in these states of our: thoughts, beliefs, desire and hopes. We will begin to see real change. Not just something that only last long enough to quench a thirst, but instead one that fills you up on a consistent basis. When we put into practice our listening, chewing and hearing it secures the grounds for these states to flourish. It opens up an activation in us we probably never even thought to be there until put in a situation where it became required to show up.
One day I woke up and I realized my thoughts seemed to be running down an express train of a rehearsal in a place I had left long ago. Abruptly I had to stop myself while I was in the shower and speak back to those thoughts. I had to choose not to rehearse places and feelings I have experienced that I am no longer a slave too. It was such a subtle detail that was happening in my subconscious I did not even realize was slowly but surely trying to find an entry to pull me back. But thankfully this realization shifted me back in my perspective. I chose intentionality that day and from there on out my thoughts have not been the same. I am more aware and very conscious of how I move about my day to day. One simple choice, one pause to reflect, asses and then enforce application brought about a completely different out come.
So I leave you with this: internality rehearsed along with a flexibility to remain open can be that game changer you’ve been looking for that doesn’t start with things but starts with you. Just take the risk and see what happens as you begin to activate this in your life. Even when the going gets tough remember the steps in between are just as important as the outcome, while being wrapped up in the motor of intentionality.
